La consciencia se puede desarrollar siguiendo estos siete principios.
1) El yoga no es más de lo mismo

4) Comodidad ante todo
Siempre se debe permanecer cómodo mientras se realiza una postura, evitando sentir ansiedad y respirar de forma entrecortada. De hecho, la clave para saber que se está haciendo bien un asana es observar la respiración. Nunca tiene que estar alterada.
5) No violencia
Respetar el principio de la no violencia (ahimsa) significa que nunca se debe forzar al cuerpo, sino más bien dejar que este se acomode poco a poco en las distintas posturas. Con el tiempo, se notará que se liberan las tensiones y los bloqueos físicos y mentales que al principio impedían avanzar en la práctica.
6) Quietud
La quietud permitirá saber qué beneficios está aportando cada movimiento, por eso es importante mantener una postura durante un determinado periodo de tiempo, que en principio será de unos segundos y podrá extenderse durante varios minutos, en función de la habilidad que desarrollemos y de la dificultad del asana.
7) Adiós a la competitividad
Es necesario dejar de lado la competitividad, tan arraigada en la sociedad. Hay que evitar competir con los demás y con uno mismo.
Conviene tener presente que la evolución y características de cada persona nada tienen que ver con las demás y que la mente no puede ser la que dicte cuáles son los límites para practicar un asana correctamente.
